However, melatonin secretion is inhibited by light and stimulated when it is dark. That is why it is often called sleep hormone or hormone of darkness. Because through melatonin, the pineal gland informs the brain about the relative durations of darkness and light over a period of 24 h (daily cycle) hours and inform as it is dark and this is the right time to sleep.

The researchers conducted an experiment of comparing the efficacy of treatment on different groups of rats exposed to light during their sleep cycle. The group that had received 12 hours of total darkness during treatment had seen the growth of cancer cells to slow sharply, improving the effectiveness of tamoxifen overnight.
